Earlier this morning, this news article on my BT email home page caught my attention, and I feel some very valid points came across, in my mind it sorts of hits the nail on the head, so to speak of one of the most arguable problems in today’s society.
If anyone has BT email as their home page you will know that when articles are printed you are able to enter a comment of your own in response to any number of stories/articles.
After reading the initial stories I was intrigued to see what other comments were made about it. What I wasn’t prepared for was the pathetic comments made by a few extremely ignorant people, who decided it would be ‘fun’ to add their own comments rather than face the fact, or even try to understand that this is a problem that does exist, is encountered by millions of us, but most importantly has several factors that do contribute to the problem. I can only believe these ‘jokers’ believe themselves to be perfect and have no weaknesses in their lives and lead a ‘perfect life’ and therefore have never had the experience of encountering this or similar problems, and therefore lack the basic understanding of why people overeat.
Some decided it would be good to make a mockery of it, calling the reasons behind the story as garbage, others ridiculed it to the point that the problem does not exist as a problem other than as an individuals own fault.
It seems to come across in the comments about the article is that what they want to believe is the cause of ‘overeating’ is always down to an individuals own personal choice.
What I believe and know from my own personal experience and from that of other friends and contacts who suffer depression, is that with this illness , that this is just one main factor that exists as part of the depression itself. What I do sense is that people who have eating issues are perhaps themselves suffering from some level of depression without actually realizing that. Some illnesses do manifest themselves in many different ways, and it can be very difficult to pinpoint any actual ‘trigger’ or the time of that trigger. I have always maintained that I knew roughly when and why my depression started, but I cannot be exact.
Many will have you believe or will say that overeating causes us to go into a feeling of being depressed and guilty, there is a strong argument against this. May be for some this is true, but it is not the case for many. There are various situations in our lives that trigger the onset of stress and/or depression and as a result our moods, caused through the dysfunction of the brain chemicals, then cause us to do these things, not because we want to do it or otherwise, but because it is a source that for many of us helps up cope.
As the author of the article states, there are triggers in people’s lives which cause the problem of ‘overeating’. Over a number of years, I have noticed that when I go into severe stress and then a deep depression, I do one of two things, I either don’t eat at all for a few days at a time, or I do the opposite and on occasions I have indulged unhealthily. At the moment with regards to my depression I am in what I deem as a ‘good place’, I am working again, be it only a short term contract, and working at Cadbury Birmingham, the temptation is all around me all of the time, and yet I have resisted that temptation.
I would have liked to print some of the comments made, but I’m not in the habit of naming and shaming ignorant people in that way, by going to the website page I have included in this blog today, you can go to the page and read for yourself, and I ask that you make up your own mind.
The original article reads as follows……
